Supporting musicians - building audiences
Next concerts in our autumn season:
The CONTEMPO QUARTET with Simon Aspell, viola and Christopher Marwood, cello
Haydn: String Quartet in B flat major, Op. 76 No. 4 ‘Sunrise’
Linda Buckley: 'Haza’, for string quartet and electronics
Brahms: String Sextet in G major Op.36
Formed in Bucharest in 1995, Galway’s Ensemble in Residence since 2003 and RTE’s Resident Quartet since 2013, the multiple award-winning ConTempo Quartet is Ireland’s longest established string quartet. They combine performance of the classical quartet repertoire with a strong commitment to Ireland’s composers. Haydn’s glorious, uplifting ‘Sunrise’ Quartet is contrasted in this programme with Cork composer Linda Buckley’s moving tribute to the great Hungarian composer Bela Bartok. The ConTempo are joined by former members of the Vanbrugh Quartet, Simon Aspell and Christopher Marwood, for Brahms’ magical G major sextet.
The National String Quartet Foundation is a legacy of the work of the Vanbrugh Quartet. Resident Quartet to RTE from 1986 to 2013 and Artists in Residence at University College, Cork from 1990 until the retirement of violinist Gregory Ellis in 2017, the Vanbrugh Quartet gave nearly two thousand concerts throughout Ireland as well as enjoying a successful international career.
The Foundation creates and sponsors projects which bring live chamber music to audiences throughout Ireland. It is committed to supporting musicians who wish to explore and perform the string quartet repertoire and to helping concert promoters present this rich and rewarding music.
With the support of major funding from the Arts Council, the Foundation’s autumn 2018 series presents nine quartets in twenty seven concerts for fourteen promoters nationwide. The Foundation gratefully acknowledges the ongoing support of its founding partner UCC, as well as the support of Cork City and County Councils.
The Foundation is a registered charity No.20200357. We rely on donations from supporters, so if chamber music has made a difference to your life, please consider making a donation.
